lovelyangel: Sana RTB Special in Japan (Sana Concert)
I’ve been underwater for... let’s see... 9 days – and am just now finishing the last of multiple full-day commitments (Oregon Country Fair, OCF photo post-processing, OCF journaling, volunteer work for my church). This means that starting this afternoon, I can return to packing up books, which has been on hold since July 10. I can also resume watching anime... and start working on a huge backlog of household tasks. I have felt a little besieged.

So I was surprised and happy this morning when I saw that on the first night of their concert tour in Korea, TWICE sang the TWICE Song in the encore. This is hilarious – and something we never, ever thought we’d see. For years, TWICE has (sort of) tried to distance themselves from their sugary sweet and cute song days – and, also, the TWICE Song isn’t really an official, production song – more of an in-house joke. (It’s not on an album or anything.) But the TWICE Song, eight-years-old, is a fan favorite – and TWICE seemed to have fun performing it on stage. (Encore songs are chosen at random by spinning a big wheel.)

There are several fan recordings of the performance on YouTube, the best of which is This One. I’ve watched the video many times today. My girls Momo and Sana were gorgeous – but most adorable was Tzuyu (at the end). Here are the Lyrics in English.

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What do you like to listen to / watch while crafting?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

I recently returned from Japan with a bunch of doujins, and I, by and large, am enjoying reading (through MTL) basically everything that I bought. This isn't so much "stuff I wish that I knew" (except for one thing), but it's stuff that was helpful for me. (Also, all the doujins I bought were M/M, so this might be of limited usefulness if your particular proclivities lie elsewhere.)

My tips are largely based around three differences that doujin purchasing has from the Ao3 browsing that English speakers might be used to:

1: You Have To Pay Money For This Shit (which means that the cost of picking up something you aren't as into or hate isn't just a time cost, it's an actual money cost)

2: There Are No Tags (which means that you have to get good at reading what the unspoken cues of the front and back pages are telling you)

and 3: Basically Everything Is Shrinkwrapped (which means you can't read a few pages and go DANGER WILL ROBINSON if you don't like it, and put it back on the shelf.)

And now, on with the tips!

- Do Market Research: I'd really recommend, before your trip, going on Pixiv and looking around the tags for your fandom. What stuff is popular? What stuff is unpopular? Are there any artists who you really like? Are there any doujin being advertised for sale that seem interesting? (Or, best-case-scenario, the creator reuploaded an out-of-print doujin to their Pixiv and you wind up loving it.) Just kind of soak up the whole vibe, so that you can more easily filter, filter, filter baby. You won't have Ao3 tags to help you and most doujin are plastic-wrapped in store (to prevent people from ruining them by flipping through them), so what's on the front and back covers are basically all the information you're going to get. Maybe there's a trend of drawing X character as Y, and you've discovered in your market research that typically that means they're portrayed as more dominant, or more submissive, or more X, and you don't like that, so you can filter filter filter baby and not come home with something you hate.

- Do Some Deep Internalization About T/B Stuff: This basically only applies to you if you're looking for BL, but in Japanese BL fandom, top/bottom dynamics are Vry Srz Bznz. X/Y is considered a different ship from Y/X. Name order indicates who's topping who- left is top, right is bottom. (If you're dealing with an X/Y/X tag, that means they switch or it's ambiguous. If you're dealing with X/Y/Z, then, confusingly, it usually means that X and Z are topping Y.) Now, I would like you to think about the BL pairing that you really really like. The one that you're going to be looking for stuff for. I would then like you to search deeply within yourself and ask yourself this one question. "Do I have any sort of preference regarding who tops and who bottoms in my favorite pairing?"

Note: This is the photography retrospective. For my notes on the fair itself, refer to these earlier posts:

OCF is my main photographic event of the year, and this year I was shooting with a new, unfamiliar camera. I had no idea how it would go, but I was hoping for good results. I had some issues Last Year when I used my Nikon Z6 for the first time at the fair.

So I charged into the fair wielding a Nikon Z8 with the NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S lens. The 85mm lens on full-frame is still a bit of a compromise, as my best photos in the past were made with a 135mm (equivalent) or 105mm lens. The 85mm is a little too short – but, on the other hand, I can use it for some wider views. I also can take advantage of the Z8’s 45 megapixel sensor and crop if I need to digitally zoom in.

The morning routine was much the same. The last two slices of leftover pizza were my breakfast. The only routine change was that I had to pack everything up and check out. It’s amazing how many power cords, adapters, and cables I have to carry with me, besides my MacBook Air and my iPad Pro. I have a Tech backpack that holds everything. It used to be the backpack I used to carry my gear to work, but now I use it only for traveling.

I dropped off my room key at the front desk at 8:40 am and headed out to Valley River Center. At 9:00 am I got in line for the bus, and there were only 15 people ahead of me – so I would get a good seat on the first bus. I expected Sunday to be slightly less busy than Saturday at the fair, and by 9:30 am only two of the three segments of the line under the canopy were full. This was definitely slower than the first two days of the fair.

Saturday morning was largely a repeat of Friday morning – except instead of going downstairs for reconstituted eggs, I had two slices of leftover pizza for breakfast. The room’s mini refrigerator had kept my water bottles and Coca-Cola bottles quite cold. In fact the lowest bottles in the refrigerator were just starting to freeze, so I moved all bottles to higher racks. (I had started the trip with seven bottles of water and three bottles of Coke.) Cold pizza and Coke in the morning is a favorite breakfast.

I left the hotel 15 minutes earlier (8:45 am) than the previous day and was in line for the bus at 9:03 am. There were only a dozen people ahead of me in line, so I was guaranteed a seat on the first bus. I had made extra sure I didn’t leave my camera behind in the car.

I slept well and woke up early then got ready for the day, wearing my usual hot weather outfit of a cotton camisole top and denim shorts. I went downstairs to the hotel’s complimentary breakfast bar and got some scrambled eggs for breakfast. The eggs at this particular La Quinta Inn are an oddly crumbly scramble which I presume is made from reconstituted eggs. This was consistent with last year’s breakfast – and a bit disappointing as I had a delicious breakfast of fluffy scrambled eggs topped with real bacon crumbles at the La Quinta Inn in Washington in the previous month. The Eugene hotel had only link sausage, which I have to be in a particular mood for.

After breakfast, I did my daily walk at Alton Baker Park across the street. Last year I learned the park well, so I knew what loop to make to meet my minimum 20 minute duration. I was going to be walking all day, but I needed a walk that my Apple Watch would recognize as formal exercise. The park was sparsely populated at that hour; there weren’t even many bikes along the riverside path. It’s super nice to enjoy a quiet walk along the Willamette River.

OCF Trips by Year

In the 20 years my friends and I have been attending the Oregon Country Fair, there has never been a year like this one. That is to say, there has never been a year in which neither Debbie nor Jenni could attend. Debbie’s current medical condition prevents her from going, and Jenni had a family wedding to attend. So this year, it was just me. The road trip would be different.

Once, back in my vkei RPF days, I wrote a story where the principal character suffered from a very similar type of gender dysphoria to me. I didn't explicitly say that I was projecting, but I did call it "vent art" in the notes.

I was so shocked at the positive response of pity and outpouring of support for the narrator. I think someone used the phrasing "no one should have to live like this" or something similar. When I got that comment, I locked myself in the bathroom and cried for an hour. It was so alien to me that my experiences were so awful and miserable that someone, upon spending a bit in my head, would feel nothing but pity for me.

I can't write anything in that AU, or even that fandom anymore. I've learned I can't do RPF without it breaking my brain in a lot of ways that are really unpleasant for both me and everyone around me. I've learned that bleeding myself onto the page in the way that I did in that fic is also really really awful for me and my brain. (Sorry, for like the 2 people who are still following me for X Japan RPF. Maybe, I'll release my unfinished drafts!)

But, I'll always have a special place in my heart for that fic, and that moment in time. I think the commentators gave me exactly what I needed to hear.
